New Beginnings

As seniors, we often feel the change of seasons beginning when our grandchildren return to school. The mixed blessing of letting go of summer festivities and getting back into a routine mark a change in our behaviors, attitudes, and responsibilities. In the inland empire, we find ourselves counting the days until the hot summer sun surrenders to fall with cool breezes and rain showers. We look forward to opening our windows for fresh air, getting around town without feeling overheated, taking casual walks, or sitting on our porch enjoying the cool mornings.

Without the changing of seasons, life would be too much the same day in and day out. Just as the times change, each one of us also have the opportunity to change, pursue new friendships, take on a new hobby, learn something new, or volunteer with our church or community. There are many seniors who make doing these things a regular part of their lives, yet there are others with serious health issues or financial challenges that make even doing simple things very difficult. This is where spouses, friends, relatives, and home health care workers can be the hero, as they help loved ones solve simple problems or manage tasks that seem insurmountable. Perhaps you are one of those who feels they need a new beginning, a purposeful way of living your life while helping or encouraging others.

When my children were young, we faithfully visited a senior residential care center sharing kindness, little treats, decorations, doing crafts, and just getting around to greet residents with a smile, a hug, and a cheerful word. Not only did that change the lives of those we encountered, it changed us. When we help others, we find ourselves encouraged and energized. Something about getting the focus off of ourselves and helping someone else generates an attitude of thankfulness.

As fall approaches, it is a good time to visit the seniors in your life. As your loved one’s age, the majority of their time may be spent just caring for basic needs. So, when you visit, look around. Are there safety issues, peeling paint, leaky faucets, plants overgrown in need of a trim, or clogged gutters? Is the frig clean, without spoiled or outdated food lurking in the corners? Is mail stacking up unopened? Is assistance needed in terms of personal grooming, light housekeeping, meal preparation, or transportation to appointments?

Just noticing these things and offering to help in some small way can make a world of difference to your loved ones. Often, families will pull time and resources together to personally assist, or arrange to bring in home care for a few hours to help loved ones maintain their independence, and continue to live in a safe and healthy environment. This is where Great Life Senior Care can make a world of difference. We provide quality, thoughtful, caring assistance to seniors in their homes.
